Recommended Books For Reality-Based Thinking
Posted Jul 07, 2007
Over at Brainsturbator, I recently posted the Power Weirdo Reading List, but there were a number of titles I neglected to include. This is a collection of the very best books I overlooked, all of them recently published and immediately relevant. Since this is more geared towards Skilluminati Research subject matter, I opted to place it here. I would emphasize again that this is a short list because I emphatically recommend each one of these titles.
Brave New War, by John Robb. Skilluminati has always been focused on "4GW" or Fourth Generation Warfare: decentralized guerilla conflicts that leverage new technology to gain an advantage over "real" opponents, like nations and corporations. There are few topics more relevant and important to the future, in my opinion. John Robb was written the book on 4GW that needed to be written: The Book, a complete guide to the concepts, thinkers, and events which is accessable and readable. Even if this is all greek to you, you will be up to speed in a matter of hours with this book.
Armed Madhouse, by Greg Palast. There might easily be better books on some specific area that Armed Madhouse covers, but nothing touches this book for providing the big picture. This is the State of the World 2008, and I would call it essential reading. Palast has a clear eye for money and power, he's not hindered by political bias, or even a shred of idealism. One of the best tourguides you can get these days.
The Lucifer Principle, by Howard Bloom. What is wrong with the world today? Nothing at all. It's not malfunctioning -- all the violence and ignorance and hatred and warfare on Earth is happening for a reason. This book is the best, most understandable explanation for WHY I've ever found. Bloom draws upon dozens of different branches of science and weaves a supremely entertaining book, which is impressive, considering how depressing his subject matter is. Three thumbs up.
