What I’d like to see what happens to that graph once you start comparing population sizes and the average commute made everyday by the workforces of those countries.  That would give a much more accurate picture of what’s going on here.  Nonetheless Americans shouldn’t be driving those ever popular gas guzzling SUV’s long distances, short distances, or at all PERIOD.

The commute distance is based on land use and highway distances. Since the 1950’s Highway Act (Dwight D Eisenhower’s responsibility - he said it was for defense!) US cities have sprawled. Most of the traffic on the “interstate” is in fact local commuting. Since the end of the second world war the US has been built around the automobile and low cost gasoline. This has resulted in more single occupant vehicles travelling ever further to complete daily tasks. It will take years and determination to reverse this trend. Downsizing personal vehicles is a start but until transit and walking are as universal in US cities as they are in Western Europe, American demand for oil will remain high. And as long as most Americans are in denial about the need to change, so the necessary policies will be deferred.
